The Sweetheart Hoya is sold almost entirely on its shape: a single, thick, heart-shaped leaf rising from the soil like a tiny succulent valentine. It's one of the most gifted houseplants around for exactly that reason, and it happens to be genuinely easy to keep alive, too.
Hoya kerrii is native to Southeast Asia, where in the wild it grows as a climbing vine with the same heart-shaped leaves, just far larger and more numerous than the single-leaf cuttings sold as novelties. Grown from a cutting, a Sweetheart Hoya can take years to produce a second leaf — which is part of the charm, not a flaw.
This is a plant for someone who wants something small, sculptural, and low-stakes on a desk or shelf.
Why You'll Love It
Because it's grown from a single leaf cutting, most Sweetheart Hoyas stay exactly as they are for a long time — no repotting, no pruning, no urgency. It's about as close to a living object as a houseplant gets, which makes it a favorite for people who love plants but don't love maintenance.
Care at a Glance
- Light: Bright light, some direct sun tolerated. Low light slows growth further
- Water: Allow soil to dry out almost completely before watering again
- Humidity: Tolerates average home humidity without issue
- Temperature: Prefers 65 to 80 degrees F. Not frost-hardy
- Growth: Very slow. A single-leaf cutting may not grow a second leaf for years
- Skill level: Beginner-friendly. Extremely tolerant of neglect
- Pet safety: Non-toxic and pet safe
Good to Know
A single-leaf Sweetheart Hoya has no growth node without a piece of stem attached, so many never produce a second leaf at all — that's normal, not a sign anything's wrong. Overwatering, not underwatering, is the real risk with this one.
