The Lemon Lime Prayer Plant does something no other plant does quite as visibly. At night, or when the light drops low, it folds its leaves upward like hands pressed together in prayer — and in the morning, it opens them again. Living with a plant that has a daily rhythm of its own is one of the small joys of houseplant keeping, and the Lemon Lime is one of the best plants to experience it with.

Maranta leuconeura 'Lemon Lime' brings its own visual energy on top of the movement. The leaves are striped in bright chartreuse and lime green along the central vein, contrasting with the darker green of the outer leaf — a color combination that looks tropical and vivid without being aggressive. It stays compact, fills out beautifully, and does well in lower light conditions that many colorful plants can't handle.

This is a plant that's genuinely alive in a way you can watch.

Why You'll Love It

The nyctinasty — the technical term for the Prayer Plant's daily leaf movement — is one of those plant behaviors that never gets old. It's subtle enough not to be distracting, but visible enough to notice. Combined with the unusually vibrant coloring of the Lemon Lime variety, it makes for a plant that's both dynamic and beautiful in a way that most houseplants simply aren't.

Care at a Glance

  • Light: Low to bright indirect light. One of the better low-light plants with real color
  • Water: Keep soil consistently moist. Allow the surface to dry slightly but don't let it dry out completely
  • Humidity: Loves higher humidity. Misting, a pebble tray, or a bathroom placement works well
  • Temperature: Prefers 65 to 80 degrees F. Sensitive to cold drafts
  • Growth: Moderate. Compact and spreading — stays under 12 inches tall
  • Skill level: Intermediate. Consistent moisture and humidity make the difference
  • Pet safety: Non-toxic to pets and humans

Good to Know

Brown leaf tips are the Lemon Lime's most common complaint, and they're almost always caused by low humidity or fluoride in tap water. Filtered or distilled water makes a real difference. If the leaves stop moving, it's usually a sign the plant needs more light — the movement is most pronounced in healthy plants with good light exposure. Don't confuse it for a problem.
