Monstera deliciosa — the plant that started it all for so many of us. There's a reason the Monstera is everywhere — on wallpaper, on tote bags, in every café from here to Copenhagen. The split leaves are one of the most iconic shapes in the natural world: bold, graphic, and immediately recognizable. Living with the real thing is even better than the image.

The Split-Leaf Monstera grows with a relaxed, spreading habit — each new leaf unfurling slowly and dramatically from a tight spiral. As the plant matures, the fenestrations (those iconic splits and holes) become more pronounced. It's a plant that changes as it grows, and that evolution is one of its greatest pleasures. Give it space, a bright spot, and something to climb, and it will reward you generously.

This is the plant that made people care about plants. It still earns it.

Why You'll Love It

No plant commands a room the way a Monstera does. Its large, sculptural leaves create instant presence in any space — the kind of presence that usually requires a piece of furniture rather than a plant. It's also remarkably easy to grow for something so impressive. The gap between how it looks and how little it asks for is one of its most endearing qualities.

Care at a Glance

  • Light: Bright indirect light preferred. Tolerates medium light but grows more slowly
  • Water: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry between waterings. Forgiving if you miss a watering
  • Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity but tolerates average indoor conditions well
  • Temperature: Prefers 65 to 85 degrees F. Keep away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents
  • Growth: Moderate to fast in good light. Leaves grow larger with maturity and support
  • Skill level: Beginner-friendly. One of the most rewarding plants for new growers
  • Pet safety: Toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and small children

Good to Know

Smaller Monstera plants may have leaves without splits — this is normal and changes as the plant matures and receives more light. A moss pole or stake encourages upward growth and larger, more fenestrated leaves. Aerial roots that emerge from the stems are normal and healthy — you can tuck them into the soil or leave them to do their own thing. Wiping the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth keeps them looking their best.
