The Brasil is a Heartleaf Philodendron that got interesting. The same heart-shaped leaves, the same trailing habit, the same easy temperament — but each leaf is painted with a bold brushstroke of lime green or yellow down the center, over a darker green that shifts toward olive in older growth. No two leaves have the same proportion of light to dark, which gives the plant an energy that the standard Cordatum doesn't have.
Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' grows quickly and confidently, trailing from shelves or climbing a support with equal willingness. It's one of those plants that fills a space fast and fills it well — the variegation gives it a visual energy that makes even a small plant feel significant. And like all Heartleaf Philodendrons, the care is about as easy as it gets.
This is what happens when a beginner plant develops a personality.
Why You'll Love It
The Brasil's variegation is unusually dynamic — the lime-to-yellow central stripe is vivid enough to read from across the room, but irregular enough to look natural rather than graphic. In a plant grouping, it adds color contrast without the fussiness of a more temperamental variegated plant. It's also one of the fastest Philodendrons to establish, which means you see results quickly.
Care at a Glance
- Light: Medium to bright indirect light. Brighter light keeps the variegation vivid
- Water: Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Very forgiving
- Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity. Appreciates occasional misting
- Temperature: Prefers 65 to 85 degrees F. Keep away from cold drafts
- Growth: Fast. One of the more vigorous variegated Philodendrons
- Skill level: Beginner-friendly. As easy as the standard Heartleaf, just more colorful
- Pet safety: Toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and small children
Good to Know
The Brasil's lime-green variegation is light-dependent — in lower light, new leaves may emerge with less contrast and a more uniform green. Brighter indirect light brings out the full spectrum of the variegation. If the plant starts producing mostly green leaves, moving it closer to a window usually resolves it within a few weeks. Propagation is easy: cut a stem with a node, place in water, and it roots within 2 to 3 weeks.
